Questions, answered
Does splitting an MP3 re-encode it?
No, not with "Keep original", which is the default. The MP3 audio is copied into each track as it is, so there is no second round of compression and no loss in quality. Re-encoding only happens if you pick another output format or add fades.
What tags do the MP3 tracks get?
Each track gets ID3 tags for title, artist, album, year, genre and track number, and the cover art you add is embedded in every file. If you paste a tracklist where every line reads "Artist - Title", each track gets its own artist and the album artist is kept so players still group them as one album.
Is the MP3 splitter free? Do I need an account?
It is free, with no account and no sign-up, and there is no limit on how many tracks you cut. The only limit is the upload: one file of up to 450 MB.
Can I add fades to the MP3 tracks?
Yes, each track can fade in and out by up to 5 seconds. Fades change the audio, so they need re-encoding: choose MP3 at 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbps as the output instead of "Keep original".
What happens to my MP3 after splitting?
It is uploaded over HTTPS and cut on our server with FFmpeg, not in your browser. The upload and our working copies are deleted once your downloads are ready. Your timestamps, album details and cover are saved in your browser, so a refresh does not lose your work.
